The Opera Park: Organic Forms in the Heart of Copenhagen

In the heart of Copenhagen, on Sydøen between the Opera House and Papirøen, lies the new green haven, The Opera Park. For DAMPA, it has been exciting to contribute to the realisation of the new underground car park.

Operaparken addresses two important needs: providing a much-needed green space for the city and its visitors, and improving access and parking facilities for the Opera House.

Operaparken features six different gardens with landscape themes from around the world. Visitors can experience trees, plants, and flowers carefully selected for their seasonal colour variations, offering a unique experience throughout the year.

At the heart of the park, you’ll find the centrepiece: an organically shaped greenhouse with a café. From here, the park’s pathways branch out, allowing visitors to follow the changing seasons and life of the park.

Car park creates a beautiful interplay between dark and light

In the centre of the greenhouse is access to the underground car park, spread over two floors. This is not a typical car park, it has a modern and distinct design. The black ceilings and concrete floors create a striking contrast to the natural elements.

At the centre of the car park, there is a direct view up into the greenhouse, where a 12-metre-tall Ficus-Alii tree stands. The tree stretches up to the café, where visitors can sit beneath its canopy and enjoy refreshments.

A great honour to be part of the project

One of the suppliers involved in realising the new car park is the Funen-based ceiling producer DAMPA.

It has been exciting to be part of the Operaparken project. We supplied ceilings for the Opera House when it was built, so it is a great honour to have been selected again,” says Lone Rold, project and architectural consultant at DAMPA.

It’s always fantastic to work on projects where colours and forms play a key role. For Operaparken, we provided various sizes of our DAMPA Clip-In Custom in a beautiful black colour. It also had to be a solution that matched the many curves and organic shapes that characterise the car park,” says Lone Rold, continuing:

I think the black colour and the perforations along the edges have worked out really well, creating a seamless ceiling surface where the light is allowed to reflect. At the same time, there’s something incredibly striking about the dark against the green oases, which are part of the car park,” concludes Lone Rold.
