New Standards for Circular Metal in Acoustic Ceilings

The Funen-based acoustic producer, DAMPA, is continually striving to offer greener solutions. As part of this effort, they now provide aesthetic metal ceilings made from 75% post-consumer aluminium.

In the construction industry, the choice of building materials plays a key role, not only affecting the building’s performance but also its environmental footprint and lifespan. Steel and aluminium, materials known for their resource-intensive extraction, prove to be a hidden gem for long-lasting buildings.

Ensuring a low GWP value with recycled aluminium

In addition to being durable and long-lasting, steel and aluminium allow for an infinite cycle of recycling without loss of the metal’s mechanical properties. This means these materials can be recycled over and over again without leaving the circular loop. This makes metal an obvious choice in circular construction, where the goal is to reduce CO2 emissions and minimise replacements and repairs.

Aluminium, in particular, plays a significant role at DAMPA, which produces acoustic ceilings in steel and aluminium.

Our current aluminium consists of recycled materials from internal processes, resulting in 57% lower CO2 emissions per kilogram compared to aluminium sourced from the East. But with our 75% post-consumer aluminium, we further reduce CO2 emissions by a remarkable 69% compared to our current solution – and that’s something we are truly proud of!” says Mogens Kjærgaard, Head of R&D and Sustainability at DAMPA.

The journey towards a green transition

In line with DAMPA’s green transformation, the company is contributing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for their steel and aluminium ceilings. Soon, DAMPA will expand this effort by introducing product-specific EPDs, which will provide an even more precise assessment of how their products impact the environment.

At the same time, DAMPA is working on a beneficial take-back scheme:

Right now, we are working on recycling older DAMPA ceilings, giving them the chance to find new life elsewhere and thus forming a central part of our circular approach. By choosing a recycled ceiling for new projects instead of producing a new one, the CO2 emissions are already reduced to zero,” reveals Michael Nykjær, CEO of DAMPA.

DAMPA is actively working towards a greener future but acknowledges that the path requires time and effort. However, DAMPA is determined to take the circular route by making small but significant steps and continuously refining processes and products.
